Apply for Philadelphia Citizen Planning Institute by 9/20!

Citizens Planning Institute (CPI) will be accepting applications for the Fall 2017 course from August 30th – September 20th. This seven-week course empowers citizens to take a more effective and active role in shaping the future of their neighborhoods and of Philadelphia through a greater understanding of city planning and the steps involved in development projects.

Special topics this session include Diversifying Your Organization, Fixing Neighborhood Issues – L&I and 311, and Resources for Neighborhood Development. There are more details on the courses in Fall 2017 CPI course summaries.

Classes are held on Wednesday evenings October 11th – November 15th from 6-9 pm at 1515 Arch Street in Center City.

Teach Green Values: Become a Keep Philadelphia Beautiful Ambassador

Keep Philadelphia Beautiful (KPB) is looking for passionate volunteers to serve as sustainability ambassadors at School District of Philadelphia schools. Sustainability ambassadors will be responsible for leading presentations on neighborhood beautification measures, such as recycling and composting.

KPB provides in-person training and presentation materials to ambassadors prior to engagement activities. The presentations have been developed with the Philadelphia Streets Department and the School District of Philadelphia through the District’s GreenFutures initiative (GreenFutures). A commitment of 2, 1-hour presentations per semester is required, and volunteers will be assigned to schools that have expressed interest in the program.

Call for Papers: 2017 John Pickett Memorial Scholarship Awards

APAPASE is looking for Graduate School program papers (individual and group) about topics and issues relevant to the Delaware Valley Region. Eligible papers can address contemporary planning-related topics, such as sustainability, Smart Growth, and energy planning, and include methods for achieving implementation. Papers must be generated through graduate level studios and/or class/course assignments.

The Start of Future City 2017-2018 Is Around the Corner

It’s summer again: warm weather, poolside Sundays, seasonally-appropriate ice cream eating, and no school! School has now been out for a couple of weeks, and we’ve all forgotten what it’s like to get stuck in school traffic in the morning. However, the 2017-2018 schoolyear will be starting before you know it, and APAPASE wants to remind all of its members that there are many opportunities to volunteer for the upcoming 2018 Future City Competition for middle schoolers.

The Philadelphia Region Future City Steering Committee is hosting an Engineering Fair for future participants and collaborators in September. APAPASE encourages all interested schools, future mentors, volunteer judges, and event volunteers to attend.

Join us at the Architecture and Environmental Design, Tyler School of Art Graduate Information Session on March 30, 2017 to learn more about the MS City and Regional Planning program and application requirements. The program has two concentration tracks in Sustainable Community Planning and Transportation Planning. Both are areas of expertise that are in wide demand in the greater Philadelphia region as well as across the country and globe. Accredited by the Planning Accreditation Board since 2012.

At the Meet and Greet with MS CTRP alumni, you’ll have a chance to learn about the various career paths alumni have taken from traditional government planning to community-based programming and policy development with nonprofit organizations, from government innovation to entrepreneurial startups, and more.

2016 Student Scholarship Awards Announced

The Southeast Section announced its 2016 student scholarship awards at the Annual Event at the Lucky Dog Saloon on November 3^rd. The winners were selected by a sub-committee of the section council using a set of criteria that included topic originality, thoroughness of research and quality of analysis and conclusions. This year the program was very competitive with eleven submissions.

The winners are as follows:

1^st Place- Group Award– TEMPLE- Community Engagement- Kensington (3 students)

2^nd Place- Group Award– TEMPLE- Division Street Revitalization (3 students)

Speaker Change!

Due to a schedule conflict, Anne Fadullon is not available to speak at Inside the Planner’s Studio. We are happy to announce that Patty Elkis, Director of Planning at the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) will be the featured guest on Inside the Planner’s Studio.

6:30-7:00: The event will begin with networking. Light h’orderves and drinks will be provided. Mentors and students from the mentor program will have the opportunity to meet during this time.
7:00-7:45: The Inside the Planner’s Studio program will take place.
7:45-8:00: Ms. Elkis will take questions from the audience.
8:00-8:30: There will be additional time to network after the event.

APAPASE’s “Inside the Planner’s Studio” series asks these questions and more. We’re honored to have Patty Elkis, Director of Planning at the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission, as our 3rd speaker in the annual “Inside the Planners Studio” speaker series. Karen Thompson of the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation will be asking Ms. Elkis about her career, civic engagement, and her advice for planners. Karen will skip the small talk and ask Ms. Elkis the big questions: What pivotal moments have shaped her career? If she could go back, would she do anything differently? Open Call for GIS Day Presentations and Posters

Do you use GIS in your research? Or, have you created any outstanding maps or other cartographic products? Temple University will celebrate GIS Day on Wednesday, November 16th from 12pm-6pm, and we invite members of GeoPhilly to showcase their spatial and cartographic work as a poster or brief (5-10 minute) presentation during this exciting event. We hope to include a diverse set of presentations, from a range of GIS applications.

To participate, please submit your presentation information, including your project title and 100-word description, and indicate your preference for a poster or talk via this link by October 15, 2016.
